USB 3

Have you seen these? The new usb 3 sticks allow you to run programs off of them. That means you can install your favorite editing software and while at a clients, load it up and use it to edit on the spot. Pretty cool. You could carry your favorite browser (Mozilla has a version to do this) and when at a public site, use it to browse and not have the traces on the public computer.

You could also keep open office on it and a book you are editing. So not only do you always have the file you are working on, you ensure to have your office software with all your settings etc.

For me, I could keep my editor on it and project files. Then in the evening, I can choose to work in the living room but still have my same editor, etc.

I recently got one of these (cruzr) and love it. There are some great sites with software now:
U3 Software Central

Portable Apps

These 2 have a great amount of software, some free. On my stick I have the following ready to go:
Putty SSH for logging on the server if away from the office
Filezilla FTP for transferring emergency files when needed
Mozilla browser for surfing the web if on a really badly configured computer that has spyware or such
Thunderbird for email
Two different Anti-Virus programs
Trillian and Skype to stay in communication with clients
Two different editing programs for editing scripts and programs

And to really top it off I can run an apache web server with php and mysql! Right from the stick. So no matter where I am, I have all the tools I need to connect and run programs to do work or fixes. As long as I can get on a computer that connects to the internet I can do coding, programming, database development and almost anything else I would need.

These are really great devices. I recommend any service tech or developer get one. They are very tiny and you barely notice it. But when you are out of the office and get an emergency call, these can be a lifesaver.
